Migrant Media
The artists in the Migrant Media series aim to connect the processes of time-based media practice with the fleeting experience of performance, while addressing ideas of geographical and chronological impermanence. This series embodies the endless search to explore, discover and make sense of our place in space. The goal of the migrant artist is to be immersed in-situ, to compare expectation with actuality, to capture the presence of 'moment' and to contextualize our paths of influence over time.
Craft Off
Curated by former M:ST Festival Director Nicole Burisch, this series brings together a group of artists whose hybrid practices incorporate craft and performance. Recent projects and exhibitions have emphasized the ways that craft can be used to build community, either as a political tool or as a relational project; these projects use the performance of traditional handicraft activities to address ideas of competition, conflict, and self-interest. Craft production, as an often repetitive and time-consuming activity, can also be considered and understood in relation to aspects of durational performance art practices and explorations of gesture, ritual, and physicality.
Mimesis: Art Imitating Life
The diverse range of performances in this series retrace an event, person or thing through various mimetic devices. These artists draw heavily from the social and/or political contexts within which they find themselves, developing and evolving existing bodies of work in direct correlation to these circumstances. Mimesis unfolds as a re-presentation of 'life' into a variety of aesthetic forms, roles or actions. More specifically, each of the works aims to evoke a past through performative means, contextualizing history and tradition within a contemporary framework.
